The internal combustion engine has a compressor-expander arranged in an intake pipe of the internal combustion engine. A positive or negative pressure difference is adjusted by the compressor-expander. A manifold pressure is adjusted by the negative pressure difference. The manifold pressure corresponds to an idle state manifold pressure or a full load manifold pressure. The negative pressure difference corresponds to a positive piston work of the compressor-expander. An independent claim is included for a method for operating an internal combustion engine with quantity control.
