The method involves providing an environment detection unit for detecting objects (2, 3) and determining available free spaces (10-13, 15-18) in area of a vehicle (1). A warning unit is provided for issuing warning information that depends on the available free space, where the warning information for a driver is visually and audibly perceptible in a normal operating mode of the vehicle. The warning unit is actuated such that the generation of acoustically perceptible warning signal is omitted in the normal operating mode with speed of the vehicle.
