The method involves deactivating driving and/or acceleration functions of a driver assistance system (2) by engaging a driver of a vehicle (1) in an autonomous driving mode of the vehicle. Prerequisites of the driver assistance system are continuously checked for autonomous driving of the vehicle and satisfied requirements of the autonomous driving by operating a control element (5). The control element is activated by the driver if the driver is not significantly counteracts steering intervention of the driver assistance system. The satisfied requirements are output to the driver. The control element is designed as a control lever.
