The method involves detecting the change of prevailing pressure in a fuel cell (12) with respect to time. The humidity of a polymer electrolyte membrane (18) which separates an anode chamber (14) from a cathode chamber (16) of the fuel cell is determined based on the change of pressure in the fuel cell over time. The change in prevailing pressure in the anode chamber of the fuel cell with respect to time is detected. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for operating a fuel cell system; (2) a device for determining humidity of polymer electrolyte membrane; and (3) a vehicle.
