The method involves guiding a cooling medium (M) e.g. aqueous cooling medium, water with cooling additive or water with ethylene glycol, to a heat transfer surface (4) of a fuel cell (2) i.e. polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, under formation of nucleate boiling. A flow rate of the cooling medium is adjusted and a pressure of the cooling medium is stopped in such a manner that the nucleate boiling occurs. An independent claim is also included for a device for cooling a fuel cell.
