The investigation device comprises a light source for the screening of the containers, and a measuring unit provided with light-sensitive detectors. The light-sensitive detector detects the light in the infrared range, preferably with the wavelengths between 1 mu m and 3 mu m, for detecting the undesired fragments of glass contained in the containers, in comparison with the intensity of fluoroscopy light which is transmitted from a fragment of a glass-free container. An independent claim is included for a method for investigation of unwanted broken glass in purified empty returnable containers.
