Detecting ions and/or ion complexes, comprises (a) providing a solution containing nanoparticles, (b) providing a solution containing isolated bacterial envelope proteins, (c) mixing the above two solutions in the ratio of 1:1-1:1000, where the nanoparticles are coated and functionalized with the bacterial envelope proteins, (d) contacting the mixture with the ions and/or ion complexes to be detected, and (e) detecting change in optical properties of the analyte solution. An independent claim is also included for a solution comprising nanoparticles and bacterial envelope proteins, produced from nanoparticle solution and solution containing bacterial envelope proteins.
