A vehicle rental management system includes a computer system configured to manage vehicle rental transactions between vehicle owners and potential temporary users. The system enables an owner to create a customer profile with information related to a rentable vehicle. The customer profile may include, but is not limited to, the model and year of the vehicle, engine specifications, and the rental price. The potential temporary user can request a particular vehicle for rent, and the system can provide a list of the one or more vehicles that match that request. After the temporary user selects the vehicle, the system can notify the customer that their vehicle has been selected. The customer can either accept or reject the permission to rent the vehicle. When the customer accepts, a rental contract is signed and the system sends a code to both the vehicle and the temporary user's mobile device to enable the vehicle to be driven keylessly for a predetermined rental period.
