The freeze prevention apparatus has a relay (10) which includes a coil (14), a terminal, and a thermal conductive material. The coil generates heat in response to a current. The terminal includes a first contact (18). A cavity is defined between the coil and the terminal. The thermal conductive material, e.g., thermal pad, is positioned in the cavity and is in thermal communication with the coil and the first contact to transfer the heat from the coil to the contact. An independent claim is also included for a method for preventing the relay from freezing.
