The method involves detecting an inhibition request provoking from sorting outlets (S1, S2, S3) towards which postal items are directed under a control of automatic sorting process. The inhibition request is validated if the automatic sorting process is sufficiently advanced with respect to a predetermined threshold. The postal items are directed from one of the sorting outlets towards the other sorting outlet until the end of the sorting process. An independent claim is also included for a sorting machine comprising a pushbutton providing a signal of inhibition request associated with sorting outlets.
