The device has a control unit connected to an image sensor, a magnetic compass (10) and an inclinometer (11) and comprising a memory (7) that contains a catalog of celestial bodies e.g. stars, and a control program. A calculating module is utilized for calculating ephemeris. The module is arranged to perform identification of one celestial body using the ephemeris from data provided by a geolocation unit (9), magnetic compass, and inclinometer. The module is arranged to realign the magnetic compass from a position of an identified celestial body. An independent claim is also included for a method for retiming of a magnetic compass of a sighting device.
