PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic north detection device and a method for it capable of measuring an accurate azimuth even when a terrestrial magnetism sensor unit is tilted to the ground surface.;SOLUTION: This magnetic north detection device is provided with a three-dimensional terrestrial magnetism sensor unit including three terrestrial magnetism sensors, which respectively detect terrestrial magnetic field intensity constituents in three coordinate axial directions crossing orthogonally one another, and a three-dimensional computing function part performing calculation based on the terrestrial magnetism intensity constituents detected by the respective terrestrial magnetism sensors for finding the magnetic north azimuth. The three-dimensional computing function part performs computing for finding the magnetic north azimuth of terrestrial magnetism on the two assumptions that at least one axis in the three coordinate axes of the terrestrial magnetism sensor unit is horizontal to the ground surface (1) and an angle of a terrestrial magnetism magnetic field vector, which is found from the terrestrial magnetism magnetic field intensity constituents in the three coordinate axial directions of the terrestrial magnetism sensor unit with reference to the ground surface, matches a previously assumed dip of terrestrial magnetism (2).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
