The method involves exploiting a layout of trigger signals (150a, 150b) of trigger units (120a, 120b) of person protection units (110a, 110b) of a vehicle (100) for determining a type of the trigger units. The type of the trigger units is determined to be an ohmic resistor when a moment of detection is in a time interval. The type of the trigger units is determined to be an inductor when the moment of detection is in another time interval, where the latter time interval is subsequent to the former time interval.
