A biometric (e.g. fingerprint) sensor that comprises: a plurality of a first type of signal trace 30 (e.g. transmit or drive) formed on a first surface of a first layer of a multi-layer laminate package; at least one trace 32 of a second type (e.g. receive), formed on a second surface of the first layer or on a first surface of a second layer of the multi-layer laminate package; and connection vias or holes 44,46 in at least the first layer electrically connecting the signal traces of the first type, or the signal traces of the second type, to respective circuitry of the first or second type contained in an integrated circuit (140) physically and electrically connected to one of the first layer, the second layer or a third layer of the multilayer laminate package. The arrangement of traces could form a linear or two-dimensional capacitive gap sensor array 10. The biometric sensor may be encapsulated (202) on some or all sides. The biometric sensor could be mounted on a portable electronic device and could co-operate mechanically with a switch of the device.
