Described herein is the generation of H3N2, H2N2, and B influenza HA polypeptides optimized to elicit an immune response that is broadly responsive to influenza virus isolates. Optimized HA polypeptides were generated by a series of HA protein alignments and subsequent generation of consensus sequences based on H3N2, H2N2 and B influenza virus isolates. Optimized H3N2, H2N2 and B influenza HA polypeptides, and compositions, fusion proteins, and VLPs comprising HA polypeptides are provided herein. Further provided are codon optimized nucleic acid sequences encoding HA polypeptides. A method of eliciting an immune response against an influenza virus in a subject is also provided by the present disclosure.
