PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for determining red blood cell indices of a blood sample utilizing the intrinsic pigmentation of hemoglobin contained within the red blood cells.;SOLUTION: A method is provided including the steps of: 1) providing a blood sample; 2) depositing the sample into an analysis chamber, the chamber defined by an interior surface of a first panel 12 and an interior surface of a second panel 16, wherein both of the panels are transparent, and the chamber has a height extending between the interior surfaces of the panels, which height is such that at least one red blood cell within the sample contacts both of the interior surfaces; 3) imaging the at least one red blood cell 22 contacting the interior surfaces; 4) determining an optical density of a portion of the imaged red blood cell 22 contacting both the interior surfaces; and 5) determining the hemoglobin concentration of the red blood cell 22 contacting the interior surfaces, using the determined optical density value of the pixel optically aligned with the portion of the red blood cell extending between the interior surfaces.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2014,JPO&INPIT
