The present invention relates to novel biological activities of monensin, an antibiotic isolated from Streptomyces cinnamonensis. Monensin has been identified as an effective inhibitor of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway and has been shown to be active in a number of in vitro and in vivo assays. In particular, the invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising monensin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, for use in the treatment of diseases associated with the deregulated Wnt signaling pathway, particularly in the treatment of bowel diseases such as familial adenomatous polyposis, colon cancer, rectal cancer and colorectal cancer.
