An isolated polypeptide comprising a thermolabile enterotoxin A subunit of E. coli, the E. coli thermolabile enterotoxin subunit A having an amino acid sequence selected from a group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 2, 4, 8, and 10, wherein an E. coli thermolabile enterotoxin containing subunit A having an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO: 2, 4, 8 and 10 has a reduced toxicity compared to a wild-type E. coli thermolabile enterotoxin containing SEQ ID NO: 5.
