The invention relates to a method for at least partly coating an electrically conductive substrate, having at least the following steps (1): at least partly coating the substrate with an immersion paint comprising at least one binder by means of an at least partial electrophoretic deposition of the immersion paint on the substrate surface, and (2): contacting the substrate at least partly coated with the immersion paint with an aqueous composition, wherein the aqueous composition used in step (2) is an aqueous sol-gel composition, and step (2) is carried out prior to curing the electrophoretically deposited paint. The invention also relates to an at least partly coated substrate which can be obtained according to the aforementioned method and to the use of an aqueous sol-gel composition for post-treating an immersion paint layer at least partly applied onto an electrically conductive substrate by means of an at least partial electrophoretic deposition.
