An objective of the present invention is to comprehensively evaluate the difficulty of a composition, taking into account such viewpoints as expression and modulation thereof. A passage evaluation means evaluates passage difficulty. The passage difficulty denotes the difficulty of performing a passage which is a portion of a musical composition (e.g., a prescribed number of measures). The passage evaluation means divides the musical composition into a plurality of passages, and evaluates the passage difficulty for each of the plurality of passages. The evaluation of the passage difficulty is carried out with a prescribed algorithm. A musical composition evaluation means evaluates musical composition difficulty. Musical composition difficulty denotes the difficulty of playing the musical composition overall. The musical composition evaluation means evaluates the musical composition difficulty of said musical composition according to changes in the passage difficulty in the musical composition.
