The present invention provides a flat panel television system displaying an electronic calendar when in standby mode and a display method thereof. An electronic calendar module is added to the circuit of a flat panel television, the electronic calendar module is connected with and is in synchronous communication with the remote controller receiving circuit of the television, and the electronic calendar module is connected with and is in synchronous communication with the display and backlight circuit of the television; the electronic calendar module comprises a master control unit (MCU), a real-time clock chip, a memory, and an RAM (Random Access Memory) register for temporary data storage, and is in synchronous communication with the CPU (Central Processing Unit) of the television by the use of a three-wire interface; a calendar setting function key is added to the remote controller and is used for setting or adjusting the year, month, date, hour, minute, week, lunar calendar, hour striking or timed alarm of the electronic calendar, and also, the time of 3 or more different regions or cities can be displayed synchronously.
