The cutting device has an adjustable knife (12) that is arranged in a knife holder of knife carrier (11). A drive unit (13) drives knife carrier such that the knife blade (14) is protruded from the adjustable knife by the rotation of the knife carrier to cut strand (15) of tobacco. A control unit (16) automatically controls feed motion of knife. An angular position encoder (18) indicates angular position of the knife. An evaluation unit (19) calculates actual length of the knife carrier when knife blade is protruded from knife. An independent claim is included for method for controlling knife feed motion of cutting device.
