The invention relates to methods for executing operations on elements of a segmented array in a data-parallel fashion. The methods may be implemented in a computer system. According to the invention a computer performs the following: receiving a command to execute an operation on an argument represented by a segmented array, wherein the segmented array has an array of elements comprising the elements of plural segments, and an array of segment indicators indicative of which one or more elements belong to which one of the segments; distributing the elements of the segmented array into plural chunks of elements for execution in respective threads, wherein each chunk comprises a number of elements of one or more of the segments; and executing the operation on the elements of each chunk of elements in respective threads.
