Methods for diagnosing, treating, and reducing the risk of developing sepsis, by measuring or targeting interleukin 3 (IL-3). The present invention is based, at least in part, on the discovery that the cytokine interleukin (IL)-3 potentiates inflammation in sepsis. Thus, described herein are methods for diagnosing sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock in a subject. Also provided herein are methods for predicting risk of mortality in a subject with sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock. Also provided herein are methods for monitoring the condition or risk of mortality in a subject with sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock. In addition, provided herein are methods for determining the efficacy of a treatment for sepsis, severe sepsis, or septic shock.
