The present invention provides novel compositions that are effective in improving bowel function and additionally provides benefits to bone health. In one embodiment, the present invention provides uses of said compositions in the preparation of medicament for improving bowel function or constipation. In one embodiment, the present invention provides uses of said compositions in the preparation of medicament for maintaining or promoting bone health without worsening the bowel function in a subject. In one embodiment, the bowel issues or constipation are induced by calcium, supplementation. In another embodiment, the bowel issues or constipation are associated with other conditions or etiologies. In one embodiment, the composition described herein comprises acetate salts of calcium and magnesium. In another embodiment, the composition further comprises acetate salt of zinc and/or vitamin D₃.
