The present invention relates to a composition containing umbelliferone or pharmaceutically or sitologically acceptable salts thereof as an active ingredient for preventing or improving alcoholic liver disease or relieving hangover. The composition stimulates activity of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDH); inhibits activity of CYP2E1 which causes alcoholic liver damage and expression of genes causing inflammation; and increases the amount of anti-inflammatory factors. Having properties of inhibiting fat accumulation by alcohol intake in blood or liver and expression of genes associated with alcohol-induced lipogenesis; stimulating expression of lipolytic-associated genes; and reducing activity of fatty acid synthase and levels of blood acetaldehyde, the composition is useful for preventing or improving alcoholic liver disease or relieving hangover. It is safely applicable to a pharmaceutical or sitological composition for being a substance derived from plants and thus safe showing no or fewer side effects on a human body than chemically synthesized compounds.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2015
