The invention relates to a method for controlling an electric powertrain (10) of a motor vehicle, comprising an electric motor (11) controlled by a power electronics (15) according to a torque command, in which a reduction of the torque setpoint if the thermal limits of the power electronics are exceeded. According to the invention: - first thresholds of torque (C1) and engine speed (N1) defining a range of operation (Z) respectively high torque and low speed in which the power electronics (15) is susceptible to undergo a heating resulting in exceeding said thermal limits; the input is detected (101) in said operating range; - activating (103) a progressive decrease of said torque setpoint linearly, following the detection (102, 102 ') that an estimate of the temperature of said electronic power circuit is closer to said thermal limits.
