Embedded memory management scheme for real-time applications

Disclosed is a method of allocating the memory in a computer system. The method starts by determining the types of memory that are part of the system and the amount of memory available for use. Next, the type and amount of memory required by a program or application is determined. If the amount of memory space that can be allocated to the program in a first type of requested memory is greater than or equal to the amount of memory space required by the computer program, the program is then loaded into the available memory. If there is not enough of the requested memory available, other types of memory devices are considered and used, if sufficient space in one of them exists. The method may be implemented by a memory manager to dynamically allocate memory to be used by programs to be executed on the host system using the memory devices coupled to the host computer system.
