The present invention relates to a method for in vitro classify and/or distinguish, in a patient-derived biological sample of STUMP, truly malignant tumors from benign lesions within a biological sample belonging to the category of STUMP, especially those with equivocal morphological features, characterized in that it comprises the calculation of the Genomic Index (GI), i.e. the number and type of alterations of the GIST genome, according to the formula as follows: $\mathrm{GI}={\mathrm{A}}^{\mathrm{2}}/\mathrm{C},\mathop{\mathrm{image}}$wherein A is the total number of alterations in STUMP genome, consisting of segmental gains and losses, and C is the number of involved chromosomes,and wherein said STUMP is classified in a group without recurrence or metastasis when the GI is less than 10, or in a group of tumors with significant recurrence when GI is equal or higher than 10.;The present invention also relates to a method for screening for compounds for the use in the treatment of STUMP, and to a method of follow-up of efficacy of a treatment of STUMP by a compound.
