PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a defect detection method and a defect detection apparatus for a metal strip edge part, capable of imaging edge parts of a metal strip while surely preventing occurrence of imaging failure at low cost, and also detecting a minute defect, thereby performing quality control of the edge parts.SOLUTION: A defect detection method of a metal strip edge part includes: a data acquisition step (step S1) of acquiring fluctuation positional data indicating an amount of widthwise fluctuation of a metal strip; a position adjustment step (step S2) of adjusting a position of imaging means on the basis of the fluctuation positional data; an imaging step (step S4) of imaging each cut surface at predetermined intervals by using the imaging means; a storing step (step S5) of storing the captured images; an averaging step (step S6) of creating an averaged image created by averaging the plurality of captured images except a target image to be a determination target, among the captured images stored in the storing step; and a defect detection step (steps S7, S8) of determining a presence of a defect by taking away a difference between the averaged image and the target image.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5
