The present invention provides an algorithm-based molecular assay involving the measurement of gene expression levels from biological samples obtained from kidney cancer patients. The present invention also provides a method for obtaining a quantitative score of a renal cancer patient based on measurement of the expression level of a gene derived from a biological sample obtained from the renal cancer patient. Genes can be grouped into functional gene subsets to calculate a quantitative score, and gene subsets can be weighted according to their contribution to cancer recurrence.
