PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an enzyme gene required for synthesizing a sesquiterpene from farnesyl diphosphate, and to provide a method for producing a sesquiterpene by utilizing the gene.SOLUTION: A sesquiterpene can be produced by obtaining a novel -caryophyllene synthase gene, a novel germacrene D synthase gene, a novel -eudesmol synthase gene, a novel -cubebene synthase gene, a novel -elemene synthase gene, a novel -neoclovene synthase gene, a novel -humulene synthase gene and/or a novel linalool synthase gene and a novel nerolidol synthase gene, and introducing those genes into a host.
