PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a modified phosphoric acid vanadium lithium carbon complex which can impart an excellent charge-discharge cycle characteristic to a lithium secondary battery when used as a positive electrode active material of the lithium secondary battery; its manufacturing method which is advantageous industrially; and further a lithium secondary battery which achieves a high output, and has an excellent charge-discharge cycle characteristic.SOLUTION: The modified phosphoric acid vanadium lithium carbon complex comprises a phosphoric acid vanadium lithium carbon complex particle which is formed from phosphoric acid vanadium lithium represented by the following general formula (1) and from a conductive carbon material, and which contains a calcium compound: LiV(PO)(1), where x is 2.5-3.5, and y is 1.8-2.2. The C-axis lattice constant of the modified phosphoric acid vanadium lithium carbon complex is 12.038-12.042 angstroms.
