The present invention relates to the use of an elastase inhibitor, preferably fahzin, for the treatment or prevention of emphysema, COPD or lung cancer. The elastase inhibitor is preferably administered by inhalation, preferably by inhalation of tobacco smoke. The present invention also includes smoking articles containing such an elastase inhibitor.
