This invention relates to an impacting apparatus for testing specimen comprising a hollow longitudinal member accommodating at least one drop . weight held thereto. The -apparatus comprises of a base plate with a plurality of fastening means to fasten specimen provided. The apparatus has an ultrasonic pulse velocity measurement equipment coupled with a data acquisition system with a real time storage facility. The data thus obtained can be used for further analysis. This enables the study of progressive deterioration of concrete under impact loading. The present invention is capable of monitoring the damage to concrete using a simple apparatus with minimal instrumentation. Due to the high reproducibility of results, the test/procedure can be used as method of quality control of concrete.
