Milk tank system, comprising - a first holder arranged for interim storage of milk from a plurality of sections of a milking device, and not being a milk glass, - a second holder for storing milk from the first holder, - a transport device for transporting milk, comprising - a milk line from the first holder to the second holder, via which milk line the second holder can be brought into liquid communication with the first holder, and a closing means for closing the liquid connection, in particular from the first holder to the milk line, wherein the transport device has a first operating condition adapted to collect milk in the first container, as well as a second operating condition adapted to move the milk from the first container to the second container, the milk tank system further comprising a control for switching the transport device from the first to the second operating state when through the mel k attaining a switchable milk level in the first container. Because pumping milk from the milk intermediate storage vessel is not started at the same or comparable maximum milk level, but preferably at an increasing level, possibly crumbling milk residues will be washed away each time with a subsequent filling.
