Use of L-histidine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof in the manufacture of an oral pharmaceutical composition to prevent or treat atopic dermatitis or contact dermatitis and thereby maintain and improve the barrier function of the skin; wherein L-histidine, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, is present in the composition as the sole active ingredient in powder form and in a therapeutically effective amount of 2.5 to 5 g.
