Disclosed is a catalyst which does not corrode in anacidic electrolyte or at a high potential, shows excellentdurability and has high ability to reduce oxygen.Specifically disclosed is a catalyst containing a metalelement (M), carbon, nitrogen and oxygen, characterized inthat when measured by Raman spectrometry, peaks areobserved at 1340-1365 cm-1 and 1580-1610 cm-1; and saidmetal element (M) is one element selected from the groupconsisting of titanium, iron, niobium, zirconium andtantalum. The aforesaid catalyst does not corrode in anacidic electrolyte or at a high potential, is stable, hashigh ability to reduce oxygen and is less expensive thanplatinum. Thus, a fuel cell provided with the catalyst isrelatively inexpensive and achieves good performance.
