The subject invention pertains to microorganisms comprising genetic modifications involving one or more target genes encoding: putrescine-ornithine antiporter (PotE), putrescine importer (PuuP), ATP-dependent polyamine transporter (PotABCD), and low affinity putrescine-importer (PlaP), wherein the genetic modifications cause increased expression and/or activity of the polypeptides produced by the target genes. The methods for producing a desired product by fermenting a biomass in the presence of the microorganism of the current invention are also provided. Additionally, the current invention pertains to methods of increasing furfural and/or 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) resistance in a microorganism by introducing in to the microorganism genetic modifications involving one or more target genes encoding: PotE, PuuP, PotABCD, and PlaP, wherein the genetic modifications cause increased expression and/or activity of the polypeptides produced by said target genes and/or culturing the microorganism in the presence of one or more polyamines.
