An apparatus and method for performing endoscopic carpal tunnel release(ECTR) surgery, thereby decreasing the pressure within the carpal tunnel that impairs median nerve function. The apparatus comprises an elongate probe body configured to be inserted in the carpal tunnel; an aperture disposed in the probe body; and a cutting blade disposed within the aperture, wherein the cutting blade is configured to reciprocate from a retracted position within the aperture to an extended position extending outward from a palmar surface.
