Disclosed is a method for preparing biocompatible, biodegradable microparticles having a controllable release profile for release of a biologically active agent contained in the microparticles. By adjusting the time period of treating the microparticles with a conditioning solvent during the preparation of the microparticles, the release profile for release of the biologically active agent can be controlled.
