Provided in the present invention is a pharmaceutical composition comprising α-lipoic acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an active ingredient for preventing or treating Graves ophthalmopathy. The α-lipoic acid of the present invention has no cytotoxicity, inhibits the formation of fat in the orbital region, inhibits the ROS generation of orbital fibroblasts and the secretion of hyaluronic acid, and exhibits anti-inflammatory effects.
