The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for data compression. The method includes the following steps: generating a cluster bundle and analyzing a type of a cluster in the cluster bundle and each frequency; mapping a universal code by each cluster in each bundle; generating a mapping dictionary and compression data within each bundle; and storing an ID of the bundle without compression efficiency or with minor compression efficiency. The present invention increases compression efficiency by replacing a long cluster with the universal code which is a shorter cluster for each detail distribution table after writing a detail distribution table.;COPYRIGHT KIPO 2016
