Disclosed are systems and methods for automating a downhole drilling operation based on the profile and energy of the drilled borehole. One method includes advancing a well set (BHA) within a subterranean formation and thereby forming a well along an actual wellbore path, wherein the BHA includes a controller module, one or more sensors, and a steering assembly, making surveys with the plurality of sensors at two or more surveying stations along the actual wellbore course, comparing the surveys with data corresponding to a planned wellbore course, determining a return path based on the minimum energy of the actual wellbore history when the actual wellbore path has deviated from the planned wellbore path, and transmitting a Correction command signal to the steering assembly to reorient a lane of the actual wellbore path so that it returns to the planned wellbore course.
