PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: active materials for manufacturing an electrode for use in an energy storage device, which are superior in energy performance, and considerably low in the production cost in comparison to those of existing materials, and which can be discarded without causing no harmful effect on the environment; and a method for providing the activity materials, i.e., a method for manufacturing the materials in any forms of films and composite materials with carbon (graphite) mixed therewith; and a method for manufacturing an energy storage device by use thereof.SOLUTION: A composite material can be used to form an electrode of an energy storage device selected from an electrical cell, a battery, an accumulator, and a super capacitor. The material comprises at least one compound related to a ferrous-ferric lamellar double hydroxide (LDH) represented by the following general formula: [FeII6(1-x)FeIII6xO12H2(7-3x)]2+[CO32-,3H2O]2-(III)(where x is 0-1). The composite material has a theoretical electrical energy capacity equal to or larger than 245 Ah/kg.SELECTED DRAWING: None
