PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for segmenting an object from a three-dimensional image.SOLUTION: First, a surface of an object is estimated using a scale estimation process such as a Laplacian-of-Gaussian filter in one, two, or three dimensions. Second, the estimated surface is transformed by applying a shrink function to the estimated surface independently in each dimension to provide a regularly shaped (preferably approximately spherical), anisotropic shape. The object is segmented from the volume of its background and inversely transformed into the original shape, which is then isolated from the image volume.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
