PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique that can highly accurately and easily determine whether an eel is Anguilla japonica.SOLUTION: A method to determine whether an eel is Anguilla japonica comprise: determining the nucleic acid sequence of mitochondrial 16S rRNA of the eel; calculating the sequence identity of the nucleic acid sequence of the region corresponding to the nucleic acid sequence described in SEQ ID NO:1, among the determined nucleic acid sequence, and the nucleic acid sequence described in SEQ ID NO:1; and determining that the eel is Anguilla japonica if the sequence identity is 95% or more, and determining that the eel is not Anguilla japonica if the sequence identity is less than 95%.SELECTED DRAWING: None
