The present disclosure relates to compositions and methods for mobilizing brown adipocytes in vitro and in vivo from brown adipocyte progenitor cells found in human skeletal muscle. Also provided are methods for treating metabolic diseases. In addition, a method for treating hypothermia is provided. In some embodiments, the brown adipocyte recruitment factor is a human protein or human peptide. In other embodiments, the brown adipocyte recruitment factor can be a non-human protein or a non-human peptide. In yet other embodiments, the brown adipocyte recruitment factor is a small molecule or a natural product.
