Preparing a cellulose; mixing the cellulose with a peroxide thereby producing a reaction mixture; heating the reaction mixture; and / or exposing the reaction mixture to UV radiation. A method for producing a nanocrystalline cellulose is provided. Also provided is a functionalized nanocrystalline cellulose made by this method.
