Systems, apparatus and methods for proving that a valuable product is authentic are presented herein. In an embodiment, a system for proving that a valuable product containing a luminescent substance is genuine includes a portable computing device and a certifying device that is physically and electronically independent from the portable computing device. The portable computing device includes a microprocessor and a data receiver. The verification device is capable of electronically connecting to a portable computing device, and the verification device includes an excitation light source, a photodetector, and a data transmitter. An excitation light source is provided for exciting the valuable luminescent material, and a photodetector is provided for detecting radiation emitted from the luminescent material after excitation. The data transmitter is capable of transferring the detected radiation signal or data derived from the radiation signal from the verification device to the data receiver of the portable computing device when electronically connected.
